Heroic Rescues by Kalamazoo Save Castaways at Sea
On December 29, 2019, the Coast Guard, along with the brave crews of the 'Kalamazoo' and 'Nobility,' successfully rescued three crew members from the dismasted sailing vessel 'Coco Haz III,' located 656 miles west-southwest of the Hawaiian Islands. The 'Nobility,' which was navigating towards South Korea, and the 'Kalamazoo,' bound for Hawaii from Yokohama, played crucial roles in this daring operation. The rescued crew was reported to be in good condition, with one member showing signs of a possible concussion that was assessed by a flight surgeon. They were safely brought aboard the 'Kalamazoo' and headed towards Honolulu, with an expected arrival later that week. The rescue efforts involved multiple aircraft, including a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules and a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon, which scoured the area for several days under challenging weather conditions, including winds of 17 to 28 mph and waves reaching 10 feet. The Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Honolulu was alerted on the evening of December 23 by a third-party reporting source regarding an unreported sailing vessel traveling from Osaka to Waikiki, Oahu. At that time, the last known position of the 'Coco Haz III' was approximately 805 statute miles northwest of Oahu. Utilizing their resources efficiently, the JRCC contacted the sailing vessel's owner with the aid of the Japan Coastguard. A subsequent call confirmed that the vessel had experienced a dismasting incident on December 19, with the crew's last communication occurring on December 20. At the time of the incident, the crew had onboard 500 gallons of fuel, two weeks' worth of food, a month’s supply of water, and an orange life raft. The crew comprised two U.S. nationals and one Japanese national.
