V.Ships Offshore, a division of V.Group, has announced the successful acquisition of a contract from Saipem to provide specialized ship management services for Total’s Kaombo Norte and Kaombo Sul Floating Production Storage and Offloading Units (FPSOs). According to a recent press release from the company, these vessels are currently undergoing conversion at the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore. Noted for their high specifications, the Kaombo FPSOs represent some of the most ambitious projects within the energy sector today. The Kaombo Norte FPSO is nearing completion and is on the verge of commencing vital sea trials before making its journey to the Kaombo oil field located in Angola. Following this, the Kaombo Sul FPSO, also known as ANTARCTICA, will follow suit. V.Group stands as a prominent leader in global marine and offshore vessel management, employing 3,000 professionals across 70 international offices. They support an impressive workforce of over 40,000 individuals within the marine and offshore sectors.
Sembawang Shipyard Set to Transform Antarctica and Olympia into FPSOs for Angola Project
In an exciting development in the maritime sector, Sembawang Shipyard has been chosen by Saipem to convert two Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) into Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units as part of a $4 billion offshore project commissioned by Total in Angola. The project, valued at approximately SGD 600 million (USD 483.2 million), will see the transformation of the VLCCs, Antarctica and Olympia, both currently owned by Euronav. Built in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by Hyundai Heavy Industries, these vessels are set to undergo significant modifications. The anticipated timeline indicates that the Olympia will arrive at Sembawang Shipyard in the third quarter of 2014, while the Antarctica is expected to dock in the first quarter of 2015. The rigorous scope of the project encompasses extensive refurbishment of both tankers, engineering for construction, fabrication of essential components such as the flare, helideck, upper turret, and access structure. Additionally, the integration of topside modules—crafted at Saipem’s Karimun Island Yard—and lower turret components will also be part of the process, culminating in the pre-commissioning of the FPSOs. Once completed, both converted FPSOs will boast impressive capabilities, including an oil processing capacity of 115,000 barrels per day, a water injection capability of 200,000 barrels per day, a gas compression capacity of 100 million standard cubic feet per day, and a storage capacity of 1.7 million barrels of oil. This project marks a significant milestone in the offshore oil and gas industry, highlighting Sembawang Shipyard's expertise in vessel conversion and modernization.
