In a significant development in maritime logistics, French shipping giant CMA CGM has received the green light from European Union competition regulators for its acquisition of OPDR, a reputable short-sea shipping line based in Germany. This approval comes without any conditions, allowing CMA CGM to swiftly integrate OPDR into its operations, a process that officially commenced on July 1. The acquisition was finalized in November when CMA CGM acquired OPDR from the Bernhard Schulte group for an undisclosed amount. OPDR operates a fleet comprising five container vessels, each with a capacity of 698 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), in addition to two roll-on/roll-off ships and three chartered container vessels. In 2014 alone, OPDR handled approximately 200,000 TEUs, connecting key routes between Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, and Morocco. The integration of OPDR is expected to enhance the capabilities of MacAndrews, a UK-based short-sea carrier that has been a part of the CMA CGM family since 2002. Last year, MacAndrews managed to transport over 230,000 TEUs, further strengthening its position in the European shipping market. This acquisition highlights CMA CGM's commitment to expanding its reach and services across the short-sea segment.
