In a maritime incident early on April 28, 2026, the container ship 'Kappa' found itself aground off Yeniköy while sailing from Novorossiysk to Kocaeli in the Istanbul Strait. Quick actions led to the successful refloating of the vessel, which was subsequently anchored safely at Küçükçekmece Anchorage Area. The Strait was reopened for navigation shortly after at 7:50 a.m. The efficient response was organized by the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center, involving a Strait pilot, the salvage tugs 'Kurtarma 6' and 'Kurtarma 8', along with the lifeboat 'KEGM-5'. As of April 29, the 'Kappa' was anchored at coordinates 40° 57' N 028° 47' E, remaining stationary.
