Formerly Russian-Operated Container Ship Joins Kawa Shipping Fleet as 'Kawa Budapest'
The 'Panda Vega', a container ship previously under the operation of Russia's Panda Express Line, has officially been integrated into the fleet of Hong Kong-based Kawa Shipping and now sails under the name 'Kawa Budapest'. The vessel was acquired by a Chinese buyer for a sum just shy of $10 million. Notably, Kawa Shipping had secured the ship for $6 million back in October 2022 from Brunei’s Amann Shipping. Currently, the 'Kawa Budapest' is being utilized on Kawa Shipping's expedited liner service that connects Asia to Germany, a route that was initiated in late 2024 with support from Zhejiang Seaport Logistics Group. Previously, the ship was active in direct services for Panda between China, South Korea, and eastern Russia. Since late 2024, ownership and management responsibilities have shifted to Hong Kong's Konteiner Logistic Asia, a firm that emerged as part of a new wave of Russian carriers aimed at compensating for the exit of many global shipping lines following the invasion of Ukraine. However, the Russian shipping sector has faced challenges, exemplified by the recent closure of one of its three services between Russia and China in February.
