Engine Failure Causes Delay for KM 'Kelud' Ferry Service

Aug 31, 2021 09:45

On the night of August 29, 2021, the KM 'Kelud' encountered significant engine problems, necessitating its operation on a single engine. This unfortunate failure led to a delayed arrival at Batu Ampar Batam port, where the ferry finally docked at the South Pier on August 30 at 1 a.m. Upon arrival, the vessel safely disembarked 215 passengers who had boarded in Tanjungpriok, Jakarta. After a brief stay, the ferry resumed its journey later that morning, heading towards Tanjung Balai Karimun and Belawan in North Sumatra. On this leg of the trip, the KM 'Kelud' carried a total of 634 passengers, which included 297 individuals continuing from Jakarta and 337 others who boarded in Batam.

COVID-19 Cases Force Quarantine of KM 'Kelud' Ferry at Belawan Port

Apr 16, 2020 09:05

The KM 'Kelud' ferry has been placed under quarantine at Belawan Port in Medan as of April 13, 2020, following multiple positive COVID-19 tests among passengers and crew. Upon realizing the situation, a dedicated task force acted swiftly, coordinating with Pelni and the Belawan Port Health Office (KKP) to facilitate urgent health screenings aboard the vessel. The ferry had originally set sail from Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, making a stop at Batu Ampar Port in Batam City before arriving at Belawan. Out of the 111 passengers on board, 31 disembarked at Batu Ampar, while 44 are expected to leave at Tanjung Balai Karimun, and 36 will disembark at Belawan. The crew member's positive test, confirmed during routine rapid testing on April 12, led to extensive screening which revealed a total of 40 COVID-19 cases, including the initial positive case. Consequently, 39 individuals were transferred to the Galang Special Infectious Disease Hospital for further care. In light of the outbreak, the ferry has cancelled its upcoming journey, including scheduled stops at Tanjung Balai Karimun Port in the Riau Islands, and has instead anchored directly at Belawan Port.

Ferry KM Kelud Grounds in Singapore Strait, Passengers Rescued

Jun 02, 2016 09:33

On June 1, 2016, the ferry KM Kelud experienced a challenging incident as it ran aground in the Singapore Strait at approximately 11 a.m. The vessel, carrying 714 passengers, was approaching Sekupang port in Batam, Riau Islands, when it became stuck on a sandbar amidst unfavorable weather conditions characterized by heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind. Traveling from Belawan to Batam, KM Kelud faced distress as it stranded off the fairway, leading to a noticeable list that caused panic onboard. Struggling against the muddy terrain and surrounding reefs near Batam's Sekupang Harbour, the ferry became trapped in shallow waters. In response to the emergency, PT Pelni, the state-owned shipping company, promptly deployed smaller vessels to deliver food and assistance, which helped alleviate the anxious atmosphere among passengers. By around 4:30 p.m., as the tide rose, the KM Kelud successfully refloated and was able to continue its journey, ultimately docking at Sekupang port at 5:40 p.m., bringing relief to all on board.
