On September 19, 2023, the cargo vessel 'Kemal Kuru', which had run aground approximately 0.4 miles north of Cape Çankaya, was successfully refloated after a collaborative effort from local maritime authorities. The vessel, en route from Sevastopol carrying a shipment of steel products, failed to respond to warnings issued by the Vessel Traffic Center prior to the incident. In response, the 'Kiyi Emiyeti 6' and 'Kurtama 3' were dispatched to the grounding site in the Dardanelles to assist with the refloating operations. At 4:55 PM, the 'Kemal Kuru', with a crew of 14 onboard, was successfully navigated back to safety and was able to proceed under its own power towards Porto Marghera, with an estimated time of arrival set for September 20 at 2 PM. On September 19, 2012, at approximately 03:37 LT, the Turkish freighter Kemal Kuru became grounded while navigating southward in the Dardanelles Strait. Vessel Traffic Control had acknowledged the freighter's perilous course and made multiple attempts to reach out to the ship, all of which unfortunately went unanswered. The vessel ultimately ran aground 0.4 miles north of Gallipoli Cankaya. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any leaks or environmental hazards at this time.
