Successful Rescue of 69 Migrants in the Strait of Dover

Feb 10, 2026 10:23

In a series of critical operations on February 8 and 9, 2023, a total of 69 migrants were successfully rescued in the Strait of Dover. Reports from the CROSS Gris-Nez indicated multiple migrant boat departures late at night. The first incident took place in the Dunkirk area, where the local lighthouse alerted authorities about a vessel in distress. In response, the CROSS Gris-Nez deployed the tug 'Abeille Normandie' for monitoring purposes. On the morning of February 9, after making initial contact, the tug successfully rescued three individuals who were in peril and transported them to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they received assistance from shore teams. Later that same evening, another report from the Dunkirk lighthouse indicated a second migrant boat had set out from Dunkirk. The CROSS Gris-Nez promptly dispatched the patrol boat 'P 607-Yser' to track the vessel's whereabouts, followed by the tug 'DFP2-Kermorvan' to establish contact. As the migrant boat's engine failed around midday, the patrol boat launched its lifeboat to assist. Ultimately, all 66 individuals aboard were rescued and brought to the port of Calais, where they received medical attention and support from local aid teams. These successful missions highlight the ongoing challenges faced in migrant crossings and the dedication of rescue services in the region.

Tragic Incident Off Calais: 34 Migrants Rescued, One Fatality Reported

Jul 29, 2024 10:18

In a harrowing incident on the night of July 27, the CROSS Gris-Nez received distress signals indicating the departure of a migrant boat near the Calais coastline, prompting an immediate response. The patrol vessels 'Armoise' and 'Kermorvan' were dispatched to locate the vessel and assess the situation. By approximately 5:30 a.m. on July 28, rescuers found the overloaded boat in distress, with multiple individuals aboard signaling for help. Utilizing their semi-rigid boats, the crews commenced rescue operations. During this effort, the 'Kermorvan' retrieved four migrants from the water. Tragically, upon boarding, rescuers discovered one individual who was unconscious. Emergency medical assistance was promptly rendered, and a coordinated response with the maritime medical coordination emergency services in Le Havre ensued to evaluate the critical situation. Following consultations with the medical team, it was determined that the unconscious migrant required urgent evacuation. A Dauphin helicopter from the French Navy base in Le Touquet was dispatched and successfully airlifted the individual to a hospital in Boulogne-sur-Mer, where sadly, the victim was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the 'Armoise' continued its rescue operations, successfully bringing 31 additional migrants aboard. These individuals were subsequently transferred to the 'Kermorvan.' During this time, the CROSS also mobilized the lifeboat 'SNS 077-Notre Dame de Risban' from the SNSM station in Calais to augment search and rescue efforts and monitor the situation. Notably, several individuals remaining on the original migrant boat declined assistance from French authorities, leading the 'Armoise' to resume its surveillance tasks. Concerns over potential injuries or individuals falling overboard during forced interventions led to the decision to allow the remaining migrants to continue their journey. Ultimately, the 34 rescued individuals from the 'Kermorvan' were safely brought to the port of Calais, where they received support from emergency services and border police.

Maritime Rescue Operation Saves 54 Distressed Migrants Off Boulogne-sur-Mer

Jul 22, 2024 11:25

On the night of July 21, a distress signal from a migrant vessel prompted a swift response from Boulogne-sur-Mer. The CROSS Gris-Nez confirmed the alert and promptly dispatched the rescue tug 'Abeille Normandie' alongside the patrol boat 'Kermorvan'. Upon arrival, the precarious condition of the migrant boat was evident as it struggled to stay afloat. In response to the critical situation, both the 'Abeille Normandie' and 'Kermorvan' launched two rescue boats each to assist those in peril. With the vessel on the brink of capsizing and several individuals having already fallen overboard, the courageous crews worked quickly to pull the distressed migrants to safety. All 54 individuals were successfully rescued and transported aboard the 'Abeille Normandie', which later returned to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer to safely disembark the rescued migrants.

Drug Bust at Sea: Yacht Engulfed in Flames During Maritime Operation

May 27, 2024 09:59

On the evening of May 23, 2024, a significant drug raid unfolded in the Bay of Biscay, orchestrated by the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic alongside the Brest public prosecutor’s office and supported by customs officials from the national directorate customs Coastguard in Nantes. The operation targeted the Polish sailboat 'Le Dahu', leading to the seizure of a staggering 406 kg of cocaine. The National Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigations (DNRED) had tracked 'Le Dahu' from the Caribbean, collaborating closely with organizations such as OFAST, MAOC, and DEA. With the Polish authorities’ consent, the vessel's course was monitored using a Beechcraft Customs aircraft, ensuring precise action could be taken when the yacht reached the Bay of Biscay. Following the operational protocol established under Article 17 of the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, the crew of the 'Kermorvan' conducted a thorough inspection of the sailboat. In a dramatic twist, the two crew members aboard 'Le Dahu' attempted to destroy evidence by igniting the vessel in hopes of sinking both the yacht and its illicit cargo. However, their plans were thwarted as they were apprehended by the crew of the 'Kermorvan'. The cocaine, meticulously packed into 19 bales, was seized and subsequently handed over to OFAST. The case has since been transferred to the public prosecutor's office of the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Rennes, which will now oversee the judicial investigation into this high-profile drug trafficking incident.
