Transportation Safety Board Set to Release Findings on Zim Kingston Container Loss

Jul 31, 2024 11:34

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is gearing up for the release of a critical report on July 31, 2024, concerning the catastrophic loss of 109 containers from the 'Zim Kingston' near Vancouver Island in October 2021. During a scheduled press conference in Vancouver, officials will unveil details from their thorough investigation into this maritime incident. Out of the 109 containers that went overboard, only four were successfully recovered on the western and northern shores of the island, leaving 105 containers unaccounted for. At the time of the incident, the Zim Kingston was carrying a hefty cargo of 30,552 tons, which included hazardous materials such as thiourea dioxide and xanthates. On October 21, while waiting to dock, the vessel maneuvered in a predefined pattern near Perouse Bank, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. A sudden storm, characterized by 40-knot winds and swells reaching approximately five meters, struck the area. As the vessel was navigating northward against the backdrop of fierce wind and ocean waves, it experienced a severe roll, leading to the loss of 109 containers and damage to others. The aftermath saw a variety of debris, from refrigerators to plastic toys, washing ashore—debris that was later airlifted out of remote locations by helicopters. Following the incident, the Zim Kingston made its way to Constance Bank off the waterfront of Victoria. By October 23, smoke was visible billowing from the ship, prompting the crew to take action to control the fire. Three firefighting tugs and a salvage contractor were deployed to assist, resulting in the evacuation of 16 crew members, while five—including the ship's master—remained on board. The fire was eventually deemed under control and extinguished by October 28. An inspection that followed highlighted various damages, including a deformed forward hatch cover near Bay 14 and compromised securing arrangements for numerous containers, some of which suffered fire damage as well. In November 2021, TSB dispatched a team of investigators to Victoria to further analyze the events surrounding this maritime crisis. After the flames were quelled, the Zim Kingston was repositioned to the Port of Nanaimo, where the remaining containers were unloaded.

Ongoing Concerns as Debris from ZIM Kingston Continues to Wash Ashore

Feb 24, 2022 12:25

Residents and lawmakers on Vancouver Island are voicing their alarm over ongoing ocean protection challenges and inadequate spill response measures. This comes in the wake of the ZIM Kingston cargo ship, which lost 109 containers off the coast near Victoria on October 23, 2021, with debris still surfacing months later. Despite extensive cleanup efforts, only four containers have been recovered so far. During a recent cleanup effort on February 12 at Cape Palmerston Beach, volunteers uncovered heaps of distorted and drenched blue synthetic materials, reminiscent of those used in surgical masks and gowns. These materials were packed into four large industrial bags, destined to be helicoptered away from the isolated beach. Earlier cleanups had already taken place, notably in late October, when debris from the contents of one of the four found containers scattered across the coastline. In total, this effort led to the removal of 71 refrigerators, 81 bags of Styrofoam, and 11 industrial bags of garbage from the beach. The Canadian Coast Guard is actively collaborating with the shipping company that owns the ZIM Kingston to investigate and address reports of debris originating from the lost containers. Plans are underway for a sonar scan of the area where the containers fell overboard, pending favorable weather conditions, and a thorough risk assessment is being conducted on the potential threats posed to the marine ecosystem. While the Coast Guard is limited in sharing details of the vessel’s cargo manifest due to ownership rights, they encourage anyone who finds debris suspected to be linked to the cargo ship to reach out to the Marine Pollution Reporting Line at 1-800-889-8852. All reports will be directed to the shipping company, which has engaged contractors for subsequent cleanup operations. Additionally, the shipping company is anticipated to monitor affected beaches every few months to address future debris accumulation.

Ongoing Search for Lost Containers from 'ZIM Kingston' Continues

Jan 28, 2022 11:09

As of January 28, the 'ZIM Kingston' is anchored in Nanaimo, nearly three months after the vessel lost 109 containers during severe weather off the coast of Vancouver Island. Currently, the whereabouts of 105 of those containers remain a mystery, with only four containers confirmed located as of October 29. Among the missing cargo, at least two containers are reported to hold hazardous materials. The remaining cargo includes a mix of festive decorations, automotive parts, clothing, toys, and industrial components. In early December, grey rubber mats related to the container spill began washing up on shorelines near Tofino, specifically in Florencia Bay and Hesquiaht Harbour. While reports of debris in Clayoquot and Barkley Sound have been sparse, there has been a notable increase of debris sightings in Haida Gwaii. By mid-December, large pieces of styrofoam were discovered along the beaches surrounding Yuquot, with the material continuing to break down into smaller pellets. Additionally, chunks of styrofoam were found on the northern end of Long Beach near Esowista, home to the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation community. In response to the environmental impact, Surfrider Pacific Rim organized a significant beach cleanup along the Esowista Peninsula and Combers Beach. Volunteers successfully collected a range of debris, including a metal barrel, a large plastic buoy, a tire, a section of a boat, and various single-use plastics such as bottles and aluminum cans. As of early December, over 47,650 kilograms of debris had been removed from the northern beaches of Vancouver Island, and by mid-December, the affected beaches were deemed clean. The ship's owners plan to conduct regular checks on identified debris sites, while the Canadian Coast Guard is poised to monitor the areas through aerial surveys. Reports of debris believed to stem from the 'ZIM Kingston' will be diligently followed up. Furthermore, the Coast Guard is collaborating with the vessel's owners to formulate a strategy for a sonar scan in the location where the containers were lost, alongside an assessment of environmental risks posed by the sunken cargo. The vessel's owner has enlisted a contractor for the sonar operations, awaiting suitable weather conditions to proceed.
