On November 27, 2024, at 09:24 a.m., the vessel "Klaipeda," navigating from IJmuiden to Liepaja, encountered a significant engine failure while transiting the eastern segment of the Kiel Canal, specifically near the Dükerswisch switch. The incident caused the ship to drift perpendicular to the navigational fairway, leading to a collision with mooring dolphins. This prompted a temporary closure of the canal section between Kudensee and Fischerhütte for shipping traffic. The "Klaipeda" was securely moored at coordinates 54° 03' N and 009° 18' E. Subsequently, two tugboats were dispatched to assist in towing the vessel back to Brunsbüttel, where it was safely berthed at 6 p.m. Following this event, the ship has been prohibited from sailing until the necessary inspections and class confirmation are completed.
