On December 13, 2017, a maritime accident occurred on the Sampit River involving the ferry 'Kelimutu,' which was carrying 516 passengers. The incident unfolded shortly after the ferry departed from Sampit Port in southern Borneo and was navigating the narrow fairway heading downstream toward the Java Sea when it collided with the cargo ship, m/v 'Maju 88.' The impact resulted in a significant hull breach on the 'Kelimutu,' specifically a two-meter-long gash in the anchor hawse, situated above the waterline. Following the collision, the ferry was compelled to return to Sampit, where passengers were safely disembarked and their tickets refunded. The necessary repairs were projected to take until December 15.

On the evening of December 30, 2015, the ferry 'KM Kelmutu' encountered a significant incident as it ran aground near Dobo, located in the Arafura Sea. At the time, the vessel was carrying roughly 1000 passengers and was making its way to Timika. Efforts to refloat the stranded ferry are set to commence on December 31, with assistance anticipated from nearby vessels to ensure the safe recovery of both the ship and its passengers.
