Sabuk Nusantara 89 Faces Engine Failure After Collision in Samarinda Channel

Aug 18, 2025 11:15

On the evening of August 10, 2025, at approximately 8:30 PM, a pilot from WITA boarded the ferry 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' to navigate through the Samarinda shipping channel near buoy 3. Shortly after, at 9 PM, the ferry attempted to pass two tugs, 'Biak 10' and 'SCP 01', which were engaged in towing the barge 'Layar Jaya 07'. Unfortunately, deteriorating weather escalated the challenge of maneuvering due to winds picking up to around 25 knots and strong currents. At around 9:30 PM, while navigating alongside 'SCP 01' and 'Layar Jaya 07', the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' collided with the barge. The adverse weather conditions inhibited control of the vessel, leading to the barge's towing line striking the ferry's propeller, which resulted in a total engine failure. Consequently, the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' lost propulsion ability and subsequently collided with 'Layar Jaya 07' again, causing a noticeable dent approximately 20 centimeters above the waterline. Following the incident, the tugs proceeded on their journey after replacing the towing line. By 10 PM, the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' successfully dropped anchor in a secure location, ensuring safe navigation through the channel while awaiting the evacuation of its passengers the next morning, August 11. The KN 'Miang Besar' was dispatched to facilitate the safe evacuation of passengers, transferring them to the patrol boat 'KNP 373'. Preparations for towing the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' by the tug 'Sapaku' were communicated to move the vessel to the front of the Muara Pegah pilot station for necessary repairs.
