Escalating Russian Strikes on Merchant Vessels Alarm the International Community

Oct 16, 2024 10:31

On October 9, 2023, a surge of Russian missile strikes targeted the port infrastructure in Chornomorsk, located just south of Odessa, tragically resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to 11 others. Ukrainian officials reported that the ballistic missiles impacted several sites, including the merchant vessel 'Shui Spirit'. This attack marked the third incident affecting commercial maritime interests in Ukrainian Black Sea ports within a mere four days, and it was the fifth merchant ship to be struck by Russian forces in the span of one month. Prior to this, on October 7, the cargo ship 'Optima' was struck by a Russian missile while operating in the Greater Odessa region, which led to the tragic loss of a Ukrainian port worker's life along with injuries to five crew members onboard. Additionally, on October 6, another missile, the Iskander M, hit the cargo vessel 'Paresa' in the port of Yuzhny, causing extensive damage. Thankfully, the crew aboard the 'Paresa' remained unharmed. Russian authorities claimed the 'Paresa' was ferrying military supplies intended for Ukraine; however, this assertion has been firmly rejected by AK Shipping, the Greek-based management company for the vessel. Officials from AK Shipping clarified that the ship had arrived in Yuzhny in ballast and was preparing to load corn. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba emphasized that these attacks represent a calculated strategy to intimidate and disrupt the functions of the Ukrainian maritime corridor. Since the establishment of this corridor in August 2023, following Moscow's withdrawal from a UN-mediated agreement, maritime trade had navigated relatively unhindered. This corridor has been pivotal for the Ukrainian economy, enabling over 2,500 commercial transits from the ports of Odesa, Yuzhny/Pivdennyi, and Chornomorsk. However, the frequency of Russian assaults on the port infrastructure of these terminals, along with other sites along the Danube River, has been increasing. Direct strikes on vessels were previously rare until September, but they have become strikingly commonplace of late. The last recorded fatality relating to ship attacks in the Black Sea occurred in November 2022, when a missile hit the 'KMax Ruler', resulting in the death of the pilot on board. This uptick in hostilities has stirred significant international alarm, as Russian actions now not only threaten port facilities but also the safety of merchant ships operating in the region.

All Crew Members of 'Kmax Ruler' Successfully Repatriated to the Philippines

Dec 11, 2023 11:59

All 25 Filipino crew members from the bulk carrier 'Kmax Ruler' have returned safely to the Philippines after facing a harrowing incident involving a Russian missile strike while approaching the port of Pivdennyi. The final group of eight sailors was repatriated on December 8, greeted warmly by representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Their homecoming marks the completion of a phased repatriation process that began on November 25 with the arrival of the first group, followed by an additional 14 crew members on December 2. Initially, the 'Kmax Ruler' was on a mission to transport iron ore to China when the attack occurred, highlighting the ongoing dangers in certain maritime routes.

Seventeen Filipino Crew Members of KMax Ruler Return Home After Russian Missile Incident

Dec 04, 2023 11:42

In a significant development, 17 out of the 25 Filipino crew members of the cargo vessel KMax Ruler have safely returned to the Philippines following a traumatic incident involving a Russian missile strike while the ship was docked at the port of Pivdennyi. The crew's manning agency facilitated their return by covering all associated costs, including travel, accommodations, and transit expenses to their home provinces. In addition, they are set to receive further benefits, such as additional insurance from their manning and shipping companies. Upon their return, the repatriated crew members underwent immediate medical evaluations and psychosocial assessments, along with a financial assistance package of P10,000 each. Furthermore, on December 2, an additional 14 Filipino seafarers arrived back at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 in Parañaque City. It is important to note that three Filipino crew members sustained injuries during the incident—one Engine Trainee suffered from a fracture, while both the ship's captain and third mate experienced minor injuries. This incident highlights the risks inherent in maritime operations and the importance of support for affected crew members.
