Ferry Fire Erupts on Labobar Due to Cigarette Ignition

Nov 06, 2023 10:09

On November 3, 2023, a fire broke out on deck No. 7 of the ferry 'Labobar' while it was traveling from Balikpapan to Pantoloan port. The incident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. and was reportedly ignited by a discarded cigarette butt from a passenger. The burning butt came into contact with a rolled garbage can, subsequently sparking a fire that spread to foam cargo situated on the front right of deck No. 7. The fire caused significant damage to various elements onboard, including wooden doors in hall A on deck No. 7, window glass, life jacket storage boxes, two wooden staircase sets, an iron door, outdoor lighting fixtures, and two speakers. In total, 180 life jackets, a hydrant faucet, and four garden chairs were also affected by the flames. Upon arrival at Pantoloan port, the Kontor Syahbandar dan Otoritas Pelabuhan (KSOP) of Palu Bay, along with Basarnas and Pelni Palu, swiftly conducted an inspection. Fortunately, the evaluation confirmed that the 'Labobar' was still seaworthy for its continued journey to Bitung port, contingent upon immediate repairs and repainting of the damaged lifeboat. The ferry finally docked at Pantoloan port at 9:30 p.m. WITA, departing for Bitung at 10:15 p.m.
