Ferry Incident: 'Singabung' Strands Passengers in Banda Sea
On the evening of December 22, 2016, at 6:34 p.m., the ferry 'Singabung', carrying hundreds of passengers, ran aground on a reef in the Banda Sea, just off the coast of Tual, located on Dullah Island in Southeast Maluku. The vessel had departed from Ambon port earlier that morning and was on schedule to reach Tual by 5 p.m. Unfortunately, efforts to dislodge the ship using tugboats were ultimately called off at 9:15 p.m. as it became firmly lodged in shallow waters and began to founder. The evacuation operation for the 359 onboard commenced at 10 p.m. and continued into the early hours of December 23, concluding around 2:30 a.m. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Evacuated passengers were later offered transportation aboard the 'Tidar'.
