Ferry Incident on Iwania River Leaves Passengers Stranded
On February 2, 2015, at approximately 07:50 AM local time, the ferry 'KM Tatamailau', carrying nearly 300 passengers, ran aground on the Iwania River near Port Poumako, Papua. The vessel was on its way from Agats in the Asmat region to the Port Poumako in Mimika regency when it encountered difficulties. Despite multiple attempts, emergency teams have been unable to refloat the ferry, leaving all aboard stranded. Authorities have advised the passengers to remain calm and stay on the ferry, as some considered departing to the shore via fishing boats. The grounding incident is attributed to low water levels in the river, with only four meters of depth reported. A tugboat, 'Tunda', was dispatched from Poumako but was unsuccessful in freeing the ferry from its predicament. For further details, an Indonesian report is available with photos at Detik News.
