In a notable development within the shipping industry, South Korean intra-Asia carrier KMTC has successfully acquired four sister ships from Hanjin Shipping, signaling a positive trend for creditors in the sale of vessels previously under Hanjin's fleet. These four panamax container ships, each with a capacity of 4,275 TEU, were built by Samsung Heavy Industries and are identified as Hanjin Norfolk, Hanjin Piraeus, Hanjin Durban, and Hanjin Rio de Janeiro. KMTC is reportedly investing approximately $5.3 million per vessel in this acquisition. This transaction comes amid extensive consolidation in the container shipping sector throughout the year, allowing KMTC to ascend into the top 20 on Alphaliner’s liner list. With this addition, KMTC’s total fleet capacity has surged to 126,351 TEU, earning the company a commendable 19th position in the global rankings.
