Collision Incident Involving KMTC Jebel Ali Near Tanjung Perak
In the early hours of December 15, 2020, at approximately 12:05 a.m., a maritime incident occurred off the coast of Tanjung Perak involving the container ship KMTC Jebel Ali, which was making its way from Jakarta to Hong Kong. The vessel collided with the cargo ship KLM Bahtera Salbach (MMSI: 525500721) near the outer anchorage between buoys 5 and 7. This unfortunate incident resulted in the sinking of the KLM Bahtera Salbach after it sustained significant breaches, leading it to submerge at coordinates 06°52.042 S, 112°44.751 E, approximately 250 meters from the entry channel to APBS. Swift action was taken by Tanjung Perak’s PLP Base and the Quick Response Team from Tanjung Perak KSU, who deployed patrol boat KN P-371 to assess the situation. The rescue team successfully retrieved the eight crew members aboard the Bahtera Salbach, who were subsequently handed over to the Shipping Agent for rapid COVID-19 testing before any further evaluations were conducted. Notably, one crew member presented with health issues and was promptly transported to a Gresik hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the KMTC Jebel Ali remained anchored in the designated mooring area, and its captain was escorted to the Tanjung Perak Main Syahbandar Office for further inquiries. In light of this maritime mishap, all vessels transiting the area were urged to maintain heightened vigilance and exercise caution as operations continued.
KMTC Acquires Four Hanjin Container Ships to Expand Fleet
In a noteworthy development within the maritime industry, South Korea's intra-Asia shipping line, KMTC, has successfully acquired a quartet of container vessels from the financially troubled Hanjin Shipping. The deal includes four sister ships constructed at Samsung Heavy Industries, namely Hanjin Norfolk, Hanjin Piraeus, Hanjin Durban, and Hanjin Rio de Janeiro. Each vessel has been purchased for approximately $5.3 million, totaling an investment of $21.2 million for the entire group. This strategic acquisition comes amid a year marked by significant consolidation in the container shipping sector. As a result of this purchase, KMTC has ascended into the top 20 of Alphaliner’s global liner rankings, now holding a fleet capacity of 126,351 TEU and securing the 19th position worldwide. This growth highlights KMTC's commitment to expanding its operational footprint in the competitive container shipping market.
