Kota Lukis Container Ship Faces Engine Trouble in Tauranga: Close Call Prevented
On March 12, 2013, a maritime incident unfolded in Tauranga when the container ship Kota Lukis experienced an engine failure shortly after departing the Sulphur Point wharf at 8:20 a.m. The port master took swift action, advising the evacuation of the salvage tug Resolve Commander and the nearby fishing vessel Adelaide Star as the situation developed. As the Kota Lukis lost power, it also lost hydraulic steering, leaving the vessel adrift and dangerously close to the Mount Maunganui wharf. Quick-thinking Port of Tauranga tug masters and the port company pilot swiftly maneuvered their tugs to the bow of the cargo ship to avert potential disaster. Thanks to their efforts, the ship, which was fully loaded, came alarmingly close—just 40 meters—from the wharf. In a decisive move, the pilot ordered the anchor to be deployed, while the tug pilots successfully turned the ship away from the imminent collision. Fortunately, the main engine was restarted shortly after, allowing the Kota Lukis to sail to an anchorage outside the port for a thorough inspection by a Maritime New Zealand inspector. The Kota Lukis is now on its way to Port Kelang, with an estimated arrival date set for March 23.
