On May 14, 2021, at approximately 6:57 a.m., the cargo ship 'Kota Rajin', on its way from Singapore, experienced a grounding incident on the Hoogly River near Kolkata, specifically at coordinates 22°16'32"N, 88°05'40"E. The vessel veered off the designated shipping channel while navigating upstream towards the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, formerly known as the Kolkata Port Trust. This grounding resulted in the partial blockage of the channel, significantly hindering the movement of other vessels aiming to enter the port. In response, port authorities established an alternate route for shipping; however, the deeper draft ships faced challenges navigating through this newly created channel. To address the situation, multiple tugboats were dispatched to assist in refloating the 'Kota Rajin'. By the afternoon of the same day, the vessel was successfully refloated and subsequently docked in Kolkata, where it berthed at 5:15 a.m. on May 17, 2021.
