On December 7, 2017, the container vessel Kota Sempena faced a severe piracy threat while navigating the Gulf of Guinea, approximately 10 miles offshore from Bonny River. A skiff, manned by eight attackers armed with AK-47 assault rifles, launched an assault on the ship. The pirates were equipped with a ladder featuring a hook, suggesting a determined boarding attempt. However, the Kota Sempena effectively thwarted the assault through a combination of barbed wire fencing, increased speed, and agile maneuvers. In a strategic countermeasure, the ship's crew discharged four signal rockets toward the assailants to discourage further advances. After nearly an hour of pursuit, the pirates ultimately abandoned their efforts and retreated.
