Maersk Supply Offloads Two AHTS Vessels to Karadeniz Amid Fleet Reduction Strategy
In a strategic move reflecting current market dynamics, Maersk Supply has finalized the sale of two of its anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels to Turkey's Karadeniz. The vessels involved in the transaction are the Maersk Puncher, constructed in 1991, and the Maersk Provider, launched in 1992. Financial details regarding the sale have not been disclosed. Earlier this month, Maersk Supply announced intentions to reduce its offshore support vessel (OSV) fleet by up to 20 vessels over the next 18 months due to what they described as 'unprecedented market conditions.' This significant fleet reduction is poised to impact up to 400 jobs within the company. Jørn Madsen, CEO of Maersk Supply Service, commented, 'The majority of our divested vessels will either be recycled or modified by their new owners to operate outside of the OSV market,' highlighting a shift in operational strategy. Karadeniz has been actively engaging in the maritime sale and purchase arena this year, having acquired at least two vessels for conversion into floating power plants. With the completion of these transactions, Maersk Supply Service’s fleet now comprises 54 vessels.
