During the night of January 4, 2012, the 'Kota Tenaga', traveling from Singapore to Kolkata, collided with the Malta-registered Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) 'Seeb'. The incident occurred approximately 2.7 kilometers south of Pulau Sebarok, resulting in a minor oil spill from the 'Kota Tenaga'. Authorities promptly contained the spill and relocated the vessel to the Raffles Reserved Anchorage, where an oil boom was strategically deployed as a precautionary measure. In response, a fleet of 12 vessels was mobilized to oversee the monitoring and cleanup operations of the spillage. Non-toxic and biodegradable dispersants were utilized to effectively disperse patches of oil detected near Pulau Pawai, Pulau Senang, and the Raffles Reserved Anchorage. Preliminary assessments estimated that approximately 5 metric tonnes of marine fuel oil was released into the waters of the Singapore Strait. Fortunately, port operations and traffic in the Strait of Singapore continued without any disruptions.
