Historic Voyage of Tall Ship Kruzenshtern Concludes in Saint-Petersburg
The iconic training tall ship, Kruzenshtern, has triumphantly returned to Saint-Petersburg after completing an extensive commemorative expedition organized by the Federal Fishery Agency. This initiative marked the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, according to the agency's press center. During its navigation period in 2015, the Kruzenshtern undertook three significant voyages, visiting a remarkable 11 countries and docking at 16 international and 7 Russian ports. Over the course of its journey, the barque covered an impressive distance of more than 29,000 nautical miles, spending over 250 days sailing between the Arctic and the Middle East. A grand welcoming ceremony took place on November 4 at the Lieutenant Schmidt embankment in Saint-Petersburg to honor the ship's return. Built in 1926 in Bremerhaven, Germany, the four-masted barque was originally named after the Italian city of Padua. Following World War II, she was surrendered to the USSR as war reparations and subsequently renamed to honor the famous Baltic German explorer Adam Johann Krusenstern, who served in the Russian Navy during the early 19th century. Now homeported in Kaliningrad, the ship is owned by the Baltic Fishing Fleet State Academy, which is also known as the State Technical University of Kaliningrad. Notably, next year will mark a significant milestone for the Kruzenshtern as it celebrates its 90th anniversary.
Emergency Medical Evacuation at Sea Near Fécamp
On October 22, 2015, a medical emergency unfolded at sea as the renowned training ship "Kruzenshtern" reported a serious incident involving a 52-year-old crew member suffering from intense abdominal pain. The location was approximately 35 nautical miles northeast of Fécamp when the alert was transmitted to the CROSS Gris-Nez at 11:35 a.m. In response, a collaborative effort ensued through a conference call involving the Maritime Medical Consultation Centre (MMCC) in Toulouse, the CROSS Gris-Nez, and maritime medical coordination authorities in Le Havre. This coordinated decision led to the approval of a medical evacuation operation. To facilitate the rescue, the CROSS Gris-Nez swiftly dispatched the SNSM vessel "Cape Fagnet" from Fécamp. The dedicated rescue team reached the "Kruzenshtern" and successfully transferred the patient aboard at approximately 3:03 p.m. Following this, the SNSM boat made its way back to Fécamp, where an ambulance was on standby, ready to provide the necessary medical attention upon arrival.
Crew Member Plummets into North Sea During Sail Maneuver
On August 19, 2015, a crew member aboard the historic sailing vessel 'Kruzenshtern' experienced a harrowing fall, tumbling approximately fifteen meters into the North Sea while assisting with sail hoisting as the ship neared Amsterdam. The incident raised immediate concerns when the individual did not surface promptly, leading the crew to fear the worst—that he might be struck by the vessel.
