Severe Storm Causes Disruptions in Hamburg's Waltershof Port

May 06, 2015 16:36

On May 6, 2023, at 1:15 p.m., the cargo vessel 'Kuala Lumpur Express' departed from Hamburg, setting a course for Southampton with an expected arrival on May 7. This reoperation followed a tumultuous encounter with the 'Al Qibla,' which collided with the 'Kuala Lumpur Express' on May 5 at 5 p.m. during a severe thunderstorm that unleashed wind gusts reaching up to 120 km/h at Hamburg's Waltershof Port. Both vessels sustained damage to their bow regions, and a gantry crane was also affected in the incident. Meanwhile, the 'Al Qibla' was able to depart the port early, leaving at 9 a.m. en route to Zeebrugge. The stormy conditions also led to additional casualties, with the 'Hanjin Gold,' 'Bianca Rambow,' 'MSC Margarita,' and 'Barmbek' breaking free from their moorings at Predöhl Quay and Athabaska Quay. Quick actions were taken to prevent further drift: the 'Hanjin Gold' managed to secure itself with emergency anchors. The police launch 'WS 35' played a critical role in guiding the 'Bianca Rambow' back to its berth under its own power, while the 'Barmbek' was secured with the assistance of the 'WS 20 - Amerikahöft,' dropping two anchors before being tethered by an assistance tug and the Hamburg Port Authority's 'Hafenaufsicht.' Despite a broken mooring line, the 'MSC Margarita' remained stable at the quay. Fortunately, although the ships and their mooring lines, as well as gangways, suffered damage, no hazardous materials were released. The Hamburg Port Authority activated all available assistance tugs to ensure the safety of the vessels. By 8:15 p.m., all ships were successfully secured, and operations at the Waltershof Port were temporarily halted. The storm's impact also led to over 100 containers tipping at Eurogate and the HHLA Container terminal at Burchard Quay, but thankfully, there were no spills of dangerous goods.

Storm Causes Maritime Mishap in Hamburg

May 05, 2015 19:08

On the afternoon of May 5, 2015, a sudden thunderstorm wreaked havoc in Waltershof Port, Hamburg, as strong gusts of wind dislodged the container ship "Al Qibla" from its moorings. The vessel's bow collided with the "Kuala Lumpur Express," which was docked at the opposite quay. To bring the "Al Qibla" back under control, tugs including the "ZP Bulldog," "ZP Boxer," and "Perfect" were deployed to assist. Additionally, the "Hanjin Gold," which was secured behind the "Al Qibla," also broke free due to the turbulent conditions. The emergency response included the tugboats "SD Dolphin" and "Bugsier 7," which played a critical role in securing the drifting vessels back to their quays. The police launch "WS 35" was also present to help manage the situation. Meanwhile, it was reported that the "Barmbek" had come loose at Athabaska Quay 8, further complicating the incident.

Heroic Rescue: Coast Guard Saves Solo Sailor from Troubled Vessel Off Cape Cod

Jun 03, 2014 09:46

On June 2, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully coordinated the rescue of a solo sailor aboard the Belgian-flagged yacht "Vagrant," located approximately 450 miles southeast of Cape Cod. The alarm was raised to Boston's 1st Coast Guard District Command Center at 9:30 p.m. on May 31 by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The 42-foot yacht was reported to be taking on water at an alarming rate of one gallon per hour amidst heavy winds and rough seas. The situation escalated early on June 1 when the "Vagrant" failed to respond to scheduled satellite phone calls, prompting the Coast Guard to launch an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod, as well as a C-130 Hercules from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. In addition to Coast Guard efforts, the USS "New York" and several commercial vessels also joined in the rescue attempt. Despite the challenges of limited information on the yacht's whereabouts, the C-130 aircraft spotted the "Vagrant" drifting with damaged sails. After failing to establish radio contact, the crew dropped a communications package, but the harsh conditions featuring 40-knot winds and 16-foot waves hindered the sailor’s ability to retrieve it. The commercial container ship "Kuala Lumpur Express" was the first to arrive at the scene. Its crew conducted a close pass to assess the situation and formulate a rescue strategy, followed by the arrival of the "Hoegh Maputo" for additional assistance. On their second attempt, the crew of the "Kuala Lumpur Express" successfully deployed a small boat to retrieve the sailor. Fortunately, reports confirmed that the man was in good health and uninjured, thanks to the prompt and coordinated response of the Coast Guard and commercial vessels.
