Rescue Operation for the Lady Alida: RNLI's Heroic Efforts

Mar 21, 2017 09:05

In the early hours of March 21, 2023, around 2:30 AM, the fishing vessel 'Lady Alida' was successfully towed into Falmouth and docked at A&P Falmouth Shipyard for critical inspections and repairs. Prior to this, on March 20, the Penlee and Sennen Cove lifeboats bravely battled harsh conditions for approximately 11 hours to assist the vessel, which experienced engine failure approximately three nautical miles south of Gwennap Head at 3 AM. With winds from the southwest reaching force 6, the 'Lady Alida' began drifting dangerously close to shore. Responding to the situation, the Falmouth Coastguard deployed both lifeboats with the primary aim of securing tow lines to prevent the vessel from running aground or evacuating the crew if necessary. Despite challenging weather, the 'Ivan Ellen' and 'City of London III' lifeboats managed to tow the 'Lady Alida' away from immediate danger, pulling her two miles into deeper waters where she could drop anchor. At 6:20 AM, the lifeboats made a brief return to Newlyn. Just five minutes later, while crew members were enjoying a cup of tea back at the Penlee Boathouse, the Coastguard initiated a relaunch of both lifeboats as the 'Lady Alida' was discovered dragging her anchor and drifting toward the shore at a speed of over one knot. Upon their return to the scene shortly after 7 AM, the lifeboats adjusted their strategy, planning to stand by the vessel until the arrival of a tug from Brixham. However, by 8:30 AM, with the 'Lady Alida' still drifting northeast and only 2.5 miles from shore, the Sennen Cove and Penlee Lifeboats reattached their tow lines and once again guided the vessel to safer waters amid continuing inclement weather, which included heavy rain and winds from the west-southwest at force 5 to 6, creating a moderate sea with swells reaching 3 to 4 meters. As the salvage tug from Brixham faced significant delays due to the poor weather conditions, a larger tug, the 'Alp Centre', was called in for assistance. By 12:30 PM, the tug arrived on scene, where the lifeboats had already towed the 'Lady Alida' over four miles from danger in challenging conditions. After completing their crucial mission, both the Penlee and Sennen Cove lifeboats were finally released at 12:50 PM, returning to the Cove by 1:45 PM, where they underwent necessary maintenance and refueling in preparation for future calls. The diligence of the RNLI crews and the effectiveness of the operation highlight the remarkable commitment to maritime safety in challenging conditions, ensuring that the 'Lady Alida' and her crew could return safely to shore.

Lady Alida Faces Engine Trouble Near Gwennap Head: A Heroic Lifeboat Rescue

Mar 20, 2017 10:54

In a dramatic rescue operation that unfolded in the early hours of March 20, 2017, the cargo vessel "Lady Alida" encountered a complete engine failure while navigating from Terneuzen to Waterford, carrying a load of sand. The crisis prompted immediate action from local lifeboat crews, particularly the Penlee Lifeboat and Sennen RNLI, who were dispatched to the stricken vessel located three miles south of Gwennap Head, within the St. Levan parish. At precisely 3:20 a.m., at the request of HM Coastguard Falmouth, the all-weather lifeboat "Ivan Ellen" launched from Newlyn. Remarkably, the lifeboat reached the "Lady Alida" just 25 minutes after launching and promptly secured a towing wire to assist the crew of seven onboard. Despite the challenging conditions posed by a six Beaufort southwest wind, which complicated maneuvers, the lifeboat successfully towed the disabled vessel southwards at a speed of one knot. The Sennen Lifeboat "City of London III" later joined the operation, attaching an additional tow rope to bolster the rescue efforts. Originally, the plan was to guide the "Lady Alida" to Mount's Bay for safe anchorage, but faced with weather challenges, the crew decided it was safer for the cargo ship to anchor in deeper waters south of Gwennap Head while awaiting the arrival of a tug. The Dutch tugboat "Alp Centre" (IMO: 9398541) was assigned to the scene, with an estimated arrival time within seven hours. In the interim, the lifeboat remained on standby, prepared to relaunch if necessary. As conditions evolved, the "Ivan Ellen" was relaunched from Newlyn to lend further support, eventually assisting when the "Lady Alida" began dragging her anchor. The lifeboat stood by with a tow rope until the anticipated arrival of the tug around 1:30 p.m. The convoy was subsequently directed to Falmouth, with an estimated time of arrival set for March 21.
