Rescue of 22 Migrants Near Gavdos Highlighted by Maritime Authorities
On the evening of September 18, 2024, a significant rescue operation took place off the coast of Gavdos, involving multiple Port Authorities including Agia Galini, Paleochora, and Chora Sfakion. The cargo vessel 'Elim Courage' and the 'Lady Claudia' responded to an emergency call about a migrant boat situated 36 nautical miles south of Gavdos. Their efforts led to the successful rescue of 22 individuals, all identified as Sudanese nationals. Following the rescue, the group was transported to the anchorage of Paleochora. They were subsequently transferred to a patrol boat, which safely delivered them to Tigani port in Paleochora. From there, the migrants were taken to a designated reception area in Agia Chania for further assistance. Additionally, the Central Port Authority of Chania initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident, and the migrant vessel was seized as part of the protocol.
