Coast Guard Launches Search for Missing Solo Sailor Off Hawaii

Feb 28, 2014 13:51

In a dramatic rescue operation, the Coast Guard is currently undertaking an extensive search for a missing solo sailor aboard a 24-foot sailboat named "Pier Pressure", located approximately 944 miles northeast of Hawaii's main islands. The search received vital support from the vessels "Athens Star" and the Bahama-flagged "Lapis Arrow", which both diverted from their courses to assist in the urgent mission. On February 27, 2014, at approximately 8:47 a.m., the Joint Rescue Coordination Center was alerted by a worried friend regarding the vessel's owner, Rimas Meleshyus. He had sent a distress message via satellite, stating, "I lost my life raft, in danger now." Meleshyus had set sail from Hilo, Hawaii, on February 9, embarking on a solitary journey to San Francisco. Efforts were promptly made to reach out to Meleshyus through various communication channels, including cell phone, computer, and satellite messaging. By 10:32 a.m., the Coast Guard dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu, which was en route to the sailor's last known coordinates, a journey anticipated to take approximately four hours. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutter "Kukui", a 225-foot buoy tender from Honolulu, has also been redirected to assist in the operation. To enhance the search efforts, the Coast Guard coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, urging any aircraft in the vicinity to remain vigilant for any signs of distress. Current conditions at the location of the "Pier Pressure" feature gale-force winds and significant seas, measuring around 20 feet.
