Crown Mary Released from Detention at Wicklow Port
The Crown Mary, a Dutch flagged general cargo ship, has been released from detention at Wicklow Port after being held since the weekend. The vessel, which is no longer listed by the Paris MoU, had made its way to Wicklow last week to unload packaged timber. The 2,622 gross tonnage ship, measuring 88 meters in length, was detained by the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control (PSC) due to inspection requirements. Ireland has been a member of the Paris MoU, established in 1982, which aims to ensure the elimination of sub-standard shipping through a unified PSC system. Following the inspection by Irish PSC authorities, the Crown Mary was shifted to the non-commercial East Pier to accommodate the dock for another Dutch cargo vessel, Thea Marieke. The Thea Marieke arrived in Dublin Port on Monday, the same day the Crown Mary was cleared for departure, indicating a busy schedule for Dutch flagged vessels in the region.
Emergency Mediation at Sea: Crown Mary Crew Member Rescued Near Rügen
On January 10, 2016, a critical medical emergency unfolded on the vessel "Crown Mary" as a 40-year-old Russian crew member required immediate evacuation. The distress call prompted the lifeboat "Harro Koebke," operated by the DGzRS Station Sassnitz, to spring into action. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Bremen dispatched the lifeboat around 7 p.m., braving challenging conditions marked by southeast winds gusting at 7 Beaufort and rough seas. In order to ensure a safer extraction, the lifeboat crew advised the "Crown Mary" to maneuver to a more sheltered location north of Rügen. Upon arrival at the scene, the patient received prompt medical care on board the lifeboat before being transferred to an ambulance in Sassnitz at 9 p.m. for further hospital treatment. This incident highlights the importance of swift medical intervention at sea and the expertise of maritime rescue teams.
Final Report Released on 'Crown Mary' Near Miss Incident
The West Finland Coast Guard has concluded its investigation into the near miss involving the vessel 'Crown Mary' that took place on June 29, 2013. Findings revealed concerning evidence regarding the ship's master, who was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 1.89 per thousand, raising serious questions about traffic safety adherence during the incident. Notably, an off-duty officer aboard 'Crown Mary' noticed the Coast Guard’s spotlight from a helicopter and quickly ascended to the wheelhouse, successfully averting a potentially catastrophic collision. This investigation underscores the importance of vigilance and safety protocols within maritime operations.
