Pirate Attack Thwarted on Lars Maersk Off Ecuador's Coast

Oct 23, 2021 21:49

On October 18, 2021, at 11:10 a.m., the container vessel 'Lars Maersk' faced a brazen attack from six pirates using a speedboat. The attack occurred as the ship made its way from Puerto Bolivar to Balboa, approximately 1.6 nautical miles northwest of Punta Jambeli, pinpointed at coordinates 003 11 09.6S, 80 03 09.0W. Fortunately, the ship's captain reacted promptly, accelerating the vessel and executing evasive tactics that forced the pirates to abandon their boarding attempt. Thanks to the quick thinking of the crew, both the personnel and vessel emerged unscathed, and 'Lars Maersk' successfully docked in Balboa on October 20.

Daring Rescue: Container Ship Saves Solo Sailor Amid Rough Seas

Sep 05, 2014 11:33

In a remarkable rescue operation, a solo yachtsman on his journey from Brisbane to New Zealand was dramatically rescued from his damaged yacht after spending hours battling rough seas. The incident unfolded on September 4, 2014, when the 10-meter yacht sustained significant damage, prompting the sailor to send out a distress call during the morning hours. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) quickly responded when the distress beacon, operating on 406MHz, was detected around 10:10 a.m. Additionally, the sailor activated the emergency function on his spot tracker, greatly aiding the rescue efforts. Coordinated by AMSA's Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC Australia), the operation saw an impressive aerial and maritime response. Four aircraft were deployed, including a dedicated AMSA Dornier aircraft based in Essendon, a Dash 8 from Customs and Border Protection, a civil aircraft, and a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-130 J Hercules. By around 1 p.m. AEST, the Customs and Border Protection aircraft had reached the scene and confirmed sighting the distressed sailor. Shortly after, the civil aircraft joined the search effort, remaining in the vicinity for several hours to monitor the situation. The AMSA Dornier aircraft arrived around 2:30 p.m. AEST, providing critical assistance by dropping water and communication supplies to the sailor. Later, around 4:15 p.m., the RAAF C-130 J Hercules arrived and provided support until the sailor was retrieved. The container ship "Lars Maersk" entered the area at approximately 4:30 p.m., assisting with the recovery process. Using night vision goggles, the RAAF crew helped the container ship locate the sailor amidst challenging conditions. He was finally rescued from the water at 8 p.m., approximately 70 nautical miles north of Lord Howe Island, and fortunately, he was unharmed. The sailor, who had set sail from Brisbane on August 29 and whose yacht was registered in Port Douglas, Queensland, is expected to be transferred ashore by a pilot vessel in the days ahead as the "Lars Maersk" continues its journey through the Great Barrier Reef region.
