Maritime Incident: Collision Near Ostend Involves 'Elke W' and 'Wandelaar Pilot'

Jan 11, 2018 18:21

On January 11, 2018, at 12:45 p.m., a maritime collision unfolded approximately 11 miles off the Ostend coast in the North Sea. The vessel 'Elke W', which had departed from Southampton on January 10, was involved in a collision with the Belgian pilot boat 'Wandelaar Pilot' (IMO: 9569011). The incident occurred as 'Wandelaar Pilot' was maneuvering to drop off a pilot. Fortunately, all six crew members aboard the 'Elke W' were reported safe, as were the crew of the 'Wandelaar Pilot'. Both vessels sustained damage above the waterline. Following inspections at sea, each ship proceeded to their respective ports for further assessment. The 'Wandelaar Pilot' arrived in Ostend, docking at Wandelaar Quay by 4:00 p.m., while the 'Elke W' continued on to Antwerp, arriving at dock 7 at 11:15 p.m. for extensive evaluations. Subsequent repairs for the 'Elke W' were carried out by Hans Weert from January 17 to February 21.

Near Miss: Elke W Skirts Danger in Gulf of Vyborg

Sep 08, 2017 10:00

In a dramatic incident on September 2, 2017, at approximately 5 a.m. local time, the cargo vessel 'Elke W' narrowly avoided disaster while navigating the Vessel Traffic Separation Zone near the Gulf of Vyborg. As the ship approached light buoy No.1, it failed to adjust its course and headed dangerously close to Halli Rock islet. Concerned for the vessel's safety, the Marine Traffic Control operator repeatedly contacted the ship via VHF radio, but the bridge watch did not respond for a staggering ten minutes. Fortunately, the crew finally altered their course and steered back to safer waters just four minutes before the vessel would have run aground. At the time of the incident, the 'Elke W' was en route from Szczecin, where it had departed on September 8, heading to La Coruña with an estimated time of arrival on September 14.
