US Coast Guard Conducts Medivac 230 Miles Off Oregon Coast

In a remarkable display of maritime rescue operations, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully medevaced an injured crew member from the cargo ship "APL Tokyo" 230 miles offshore from central Oregon on November 17, 2013. The urgent call for assistance came from the "APL Tokyo" after their second engineer suffered burns due to contact with hot oil. The Coast Guard's Pacific Area command center received the distress signal around 11:30 p.m. on November 16, prompting immediate action. Coast Guard District 13 personnel quickly coordinated with the ship's captain and mobilized rescue teams from Air Station Astoria, Oregon, and Air Station Sacramento. As part of the operation, the captain was instructed to navigate the vessel closer to shore to facilitate the medevac. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was dispatched from Air Station Astoria, while a C-130 Hercules aircraft took off from Sacramento as air support. By approximately 4:10 p.m. on November 17, the two aircrews successfully rendezvoused with the "APL Tokyo," allowing for a prompt hoist of the injured engineer aboard the Jayhawk helicopter.
