U.S. Military Targets Shadow Tanker 'Lexie' with Precision Airstrike

Jun 04, 2026 10:13

On June 2, 2026, the U.S. military intercepted the sanctioned tanker 'Lexie' while it was traversing international waters en route to Iran's Kharg Island oil export terminal in the Persian Gulf. The vessel's crew ignored multiple warnings from U.S. forces over a span of 24 hours, leading to a decisive military response. A U.S. aircraft launched a Hellfire missile that effectively struck the tanker’s engine room on the port side, rendering the ship inoperable and preventing its entry into Iranian waters. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident. By specifically targeting the propulsion system with a precision-guided munition, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) successfully enforced the ongoing maritime blockade while mitigating the potential for ecological disaster and extensive collateral damage. The 'Lexie', previously identified by the U.S. Treasury Department as a former Cameroon-flagged crude oil tanker, was sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in March 2025 due to its alleged involvement in transporting Iranian crude oil via ship-to-ship transfers. The tanker was connected to Sea Services Providers NV, a Suriname-based entity, and has been part of Iran’s covert operations to export oil despite stringent international sanctions. Previously flying the flag of Botswana, which lacks a formal shipping registry, the vessel began violating sanctions related to Iranian oil exports back in August 2019 and has allegedly shipped around 47 million barrels of Iranian oil since that time. Its illicit activities gained public attention in November 2020, but OFAC did not issue formal sanctions until five years later. In response to the retaliatory strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched drones and missiles at U.S. military facilities, including the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. CENTCOM countered these claims, asserting that reports regarding attacks on the U.S. fleet headquarters and a nearby airbase were unfounded. Additionally, Iran asserted on June 3 that it had targeted a U.S. Navy vessel in the Gulf of Oman, a claim also dismissed by Centcom. The U.S. military reported successfully downing several drones that were launched to attack U.S. operations in Kuwait. However, reports indicated that an Iranian drone strike on Kuwait’s international airport resulted in one fatality and over 60 injuries, prompting the airport's closure.
