Former Captain of 'Liberty Glory' Charged with Sexual Assault at Sea

Jun 06, 2025 09:54

In a groundbreaking case, the U.S. Department of Justice has initiated criminal proceedings against John Merrone, the former captain of the bulk carrier 'Liberty Glory', for his alleged involvement in drugging and sexually assaulting a cadet from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. This significant legal action, filed in the Eastern District of New York, represents the first prosecution for sexual assault aboard a U.S. commercial vessel in over four decades, according to case counsel. The indictment outlines five criminal charges against Merrone stemming from events that took place on September 9, 2019, while the vessel was traveling from Bahrain to Corpus Christi, Texas. The serious allegations include aggravated sexual abuse for reportedly incapacitating the female victim through drugging before the assault, sexual abuse tied to acts committed without the victim's consent, and three counts of abusive sexual contact concerning unwanted advances while the victim was either unconscious or unable to consent. Justice4Mariners is representing the primary victim, who is joined by another alleged victim with similar accusations. This case not only brings attention to individual misconduct but also sheds light on systemic issues in the maritime industry. Despite a prior conviction for false imprisonment and battery in Florida, Merrone continued to be employed in the commercial maritime sector while U.S. Maritime Academy cadets were assigned to his vessels. The situation escalated to the point where, under public scrutiny, the American Maritime Officers union expelled Merrone due to numerous credible allegations jeopardizing crew safety. Shortly thereafter, he voluntarily relinquished his Merchant Mariner Credential to the U.S. Coast Guard and accepted a lifetime ban from the maritime profession.
