In a groundbreaking case, the U.S. Department of Justice has initiated criminal proceedings against John Merrone, the former captain of the bulk carrier 'Liberty Glory', for his alleged involvement in drugging and sexually assaulting a cadet from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. This significant legal action, filed in the Eastern District of New York, represents the first prosecution for sexual assault aboard a U.S. commercial vessel in over four decades, according to case counsel. The indictment outlines five criminal charges against Merrone stemming from events that took place on September 9, 2019, while the vessel was traveling from Bahrain to Corpus Christi, Texas. The serious allegations include aggravated sexual abuse for reportedly incapacitating the female victim through drugging before the assault, sexual abuse tied to acts committed without the victim's consent, and three counts of abusive sexual contact concerning unwanted advances while the victim was either unconscious or unable to consent.
