Coast Guard Conducts Urgent Medevac Operation 57 Miles Off Newport
In a swift response to a medical emergency at sea, the US Coast Guard successfully medevaced a crew member from the cargo vessel 'Malto Hope', which was making its way from Kobe. The incident unfolded approximately 57 miles offshore Newport on July 16, 2022. Coast Guard watchstanders received a distress call in the evening about a 29-year-old male aboard the ship who had suffered a stroke alongside related complications. This event occurred roughly 1,000 miles west of the Oregon coastline. To facilitate the rescue, personnel at the 13th Coast Guard District Command Center advised the vessel to navigate closer to the shoreline, allowing for a quicker medical evacuation by air. Once within the range required for a rescue operation, Coast Guard watchstanders coordinated the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport. The helicopter crew reached the scene on July 18 at approximately 10:30 a.m., successfully hoisting the affected crew member and transporting him to shore, where emergency medical services were on standby. The man was reported in stable condition following the evacuation. Coast Guard Launches Search for Missing Crew Member from Malto Hope
A distressing incident unfolded on May 12, 2014, when a 53-year-old crew member vanished from the 'Malto Hope' while the vessel was navigating approximately 40 miles from Attu in the Aleutian Islands. The exact circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear, particularly the precise spot from where he may have gone overboard. In response to this emergency, the Coast Guard in Juneau deployed a C-130 aircraft from Kodiak to initiate a search for the missing mariner. Unfortunately, the aircraft could only remain in the area for about thirty minutes due to dense fog that severely hampered visibility. In addition to the Coast Guard's efforts, two Good Samaritan vessels joined the search operation, scouring the surrounding waters. As efforts continue, the Coast Guard has broadcast a series of urgent marine alerts, while the freighter remains focused on locating its missing crew member. The 'Malto Hope' had set sail from Vancouver a week prior, en route to Japan.
