Identifying High-Risk Tankers Facing Seizure Threats

Jan 16, 2026 09:50

In light of the recent seizure of the 'Veronica' (IMO: 9256860) on January 15, maritime authorities have pinpointed additional tankers that are currently under threat of being seized. Among these is the 'Lydya N', which raises significant red flags due to its substantial AIS gap of 274 days, in addition to notable elevations in Ship-to-Ship (STS) activity, both normal and dark. Several other vessels have also been flagged for concern: 'Bertha' (IMO: 9292163) demonstrates spoofing activities at level 5, with a high-risk STS score of 10 and dark STS count of 15; 'Veronica III' (IMO: 7338595) shows moderate spoofing alongside heightened STS and dark STS activities; and finally, 'Vesna' (IMO: 9233349), which reports spoofing at level 6 and dark STS activities at 10. These vessels are statistically aligned with previously seized tankers linked to Venezuelan operations, and they are likely to face enforcement actions in connection with risky port calls or STS operations. A common pattern among these ships is deceptive AIS behavior, which includes, but is not limited to, extended periods of offshore loitering, sudden movement resumes, and disruptions to enforcement protocols. Recent analyses have highlighted AIS spoofing as the predominant early warning indicator, with prolonged gaps in AIS tracking and dark or STS activities acting as secondary enforcement triggers. Among the 19 Venezuelan-linked vessels currently facing sanctions, all those that were seized shared a behavioral pattern over the last five months. The seizures typically occur when multiple risk factors are present, rather than from any single infraction. Notably, seized vessels demonstrated nearly double the level of spoofing activity compared to non-seized counterparts (4.2 vs 2.21), with four of the taken ships exhibiting a high intensity of spoofing—three of which classified as extreme outliers. Two parallel escalation tracks have been identified: one driven by spoofing dominance and the other influenced by AIS gaps alongside dark or STS-related activities. Furthermore, the seized vessels showcased an increased tendency toward high-risk port calls, indicating precise operational pressure points that heighten enforcement risks. In contrast, ambiguity in flags failed to provide any substantial differentiation in the risk assessment.
