Significant Penalty Imposed on 'Lime' for Discharging Contaminated Water
On December 26, 2022, at noon, the vessel 'Lime' was caught discharging polluted water while docked at Derince. The local municipality's environmental pollution prevention department swiftly responded by imposing a fine for non-compliance with MARPOL regulations. This incident triggered an investigation by local authorities, which ultimately confirmed the vessel's culpability in the environmental breach. Consequently, a hefty fine amounting to $186,500 was levied against the ship. Moreover, the Harbour Master suspended the vessel's departure permissions until the fine, along with the costs for necessary cleanup operations, is settled. As of December 27, 2022, the 'Lime' remained anchored in Kocaeli at coordinates 40° 44.28' N and 029° 54.88' E.
Ukrainian Crew Stranded on Damaged 'Lime' Vessel Amidst Payment Dispute
A group of 12 Ukrainian sailors find themselves stranded on the damaged vessel 'Lime'. Eight months ago, the crew was contacted by M & P Lime Shipping Ltd. regarding the preparation of their ship. To keep them busy, the sailors were directed to Turkey aboard another ship, also named 'Lime', to collect construction supplies. A month later, they were promised wages but instead faced ongoing delays, which led to frustration among the crew and threats to strike. In an attempt to resolve the situation, the ship's owner requested that the crew transport goods to the port of Dnepropetrovsk and assured them they would be paid. On November 14, the 'Lime' ran aground on the Dnieper River, just north of Zaporozhye, while a pilot was onboard en route to Dnepropetrovsk. The vessel sustained significant damage, with a five-meter-long and 80-centimeter-wide hole, causing it to take on water. Fortunately, the crew was able to manage the situation, and the ship docked in Dnepropetrovsk where it anchored. However, tensions escalated as the owner accused the crew of causing further damage to the ship and cargo, claiming any owed wages would be deducted for repairs. The sailors now find themselves without pay and struggling with dwindling supplies and power. The owner has since offered to have the crew take the 'Lime' to Kherson for repairs while promising to settle their dues.
