Tobermory RNLI's Heroic 13-Hour Rescue of Stranded Cargo Ship in Sound of Mull

Jun 23, 2022 11:07

On June 22, 2022, at approximately 8 a.m., the Tobermory RNLI received a call from the Stornoway Coastguard requesting urgent assistance for the cargo ship 'Liva Greta.' The vessel, which was traveling from Rotterdam, had run aground in the picturesque Sound of Mull, near Drimnin on the Morvern peninsula. The grounding occurred at 6:35 a.m., placing the ship in a perilous position south of Bunavullin at coordinates 56 36 13.2 N, 005 58 42 W. Upon arrival, the Tobermory RNLI crew deployed their lifeboat, standing by while the rising tide enabled the 'Liva Greta' to refloat. After the ship freed itself from the shallow waters, the crew began a thorough assessment of the damage incurred during the grounding. It was soon established that the 'Liva Greta' was taking on water in its forepeak, though the onboard pumps were managing to handle the influx. In consultation with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and due to safety precautions, the lifeboat was tasked to escort the vessel towards its intended destination at Corpach, situated north of Fort William. Plans were made for the Oban RNLI lifeboat to take over the escort duties as they approached the entrance of Loch Linnhe. However, just as the Tobermory crew arrived on site, the Oban lifeboat was diverted to respond to another emergency. Accordingly, the dedicated Tobermory volunteers continued to escort the 'Liva Greta' directly to Corpach. Their tireless efforts culminated in a remarkable journey of over 90 nautical miles, with the crew returning to Tobermory at 9:30 p.m., concluding a grueling service that lasted more than 13 hours. This incident highlights the unwavering commitment and seamanship of the RNLI volunteers in safeguarding lives and vessels along the stunning Scottish coastline.
