Sardinian Oil Company Rescues Crew on Abandoned Cargo Ship with Diesel Donation

Aug 18, 2020 12:18

In a remarkable display of support, a Sardinian oil company has stepped in to assist the stranded crew aboard the 'Khosrov Bey' by donating six tons of diesel fuel. This generous contribution, made on the afternoon of August 17, allowed for the reactivation of essential systems such as water heating and air conditioning on the vessel, which is currently docked at the port of Oristano. The ship has been under seizure due to ongoing maritime litigation involving its Turkish owner. The timely fuel donation provided a lifeline for the remaining ten crew members, enabling the restoration of critical on-board services including air conditioning, food refrigeration, and heated water, thus improving livability and hygiene conditions aboard the ship. Just days prior, the situation had deteriorated as the ship's fuel ran out, exacerbated by the shipping company’s negligence, which had effectively abandoned both the vessel and its crew. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Port Authority of Oristano mobilized resources to ensure that professional assistance was available. They coordinated with the local Fire Brigade, facilitated by the Prefecture, to oversee the operation and guarantee the well-being of the crew during this challenging time. Two Palmali Maritime Ships Detained in Oristano Amid Financial Woes

Jun 26, 2020 10:20

On May 6, 2023, the Port of Oristano became the site of significant maritime scrutiny as two vessels operated by Palmali Maritime Company faced detention. The ships in question, the 'General Shiklinsky' (IMO: 9437775) and the 'Khosrov Bey', were held under the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU) for failing to meet established international safety regulations. This action followed the arrest and incarceration of Mubariz Mansimov Gurbanoğlu, the company's board chairman, on allegations related to his involvement with the FETÖ Terrorist Organization. The detention was driven by findings from the Port State Control (PSC) inspectors who identified several irregularities during their inspection. Furthermore, the arrest stemmed from a request by an international credit institution concerning Palmali Maritime's outstanding debts, which prompted intervention by the Italian Maritime Authority. The 'General Shiklinsky', which had been transporting wheat, and the 'Khosrov Bey', loaded with corn, were both placed under seizure by the Civil Court of Oristano while awaiting resolution of a lawsuit filed by a creditor regarding unpaid fuel supplies. In light of the difficult situation, the Port Authority of Oristano, in collaboration with Caritas, is actively working to alleviate the hardships experienced by the 29 crew members stranded aboard the vessels. Given the shipowner's apparent financial struggles, ensuring adequate living conditions had become a challenge. To support the crew, on June 22, the Port Authority facilitated the provision of food and essential supplies through generous donations from the diocesan Caritas, demonstrating a commitment to humanitarian assistance amidst maritime challenges.

On March 3, 2016, the cargo ship 'Khorsov Bey' experienced engine failure while navigating the Kerch Strait, heading from Berdyansk to Chalkis. By March 9, the convoy reached the outer roads of Istanbul, where the tug continued to provide support as the 'Khorsov Bey' approached its destination in Tuzla.
