Coast Guard and Commercial Vessel Rescue Tug and Barge Trapped in Hudson River Ice

Feb 20, 2015 11:56

In a dramatic operation on February 18, 2015, two Coast Guard cutters and a nearby commercial tug united efforts to rescue the tugboat 'Maryland' and its accompanying oil barge from a precarious situation on the icy Hudson River, just off West Point. The rescue mission commenced early at around 3 a.m. when the crew of the 'Maryland' reported their distress to the Coast Guard’s New York command center. Responding promptly, the Coast Guard dispatched the cutters 'Line' and 'Willow' to assist in the operation. The 'Maryland', which was en route to Newburgh with a significant cargo of 27,000 barrels of home heating oil, found itself immobilized by the thick ice that had formed due to freezing conditions. In addition to Coast Guard assistance, the crew sought help from the commercial tug 'Jason Reinauer' for further support. The Coast Guard cutter 'Line' arrived first at approximately 8 a.m., followed by the 'Jason Reinauer' around 9 a.m. However, initial attempts to break the 'Maryland' free were challenging, as the tug had been stuck for an extended period in the frozen waters. Shortly thereafter, 'Willow' joined the rescue efforts roughly an hour later. To coordinate a successful rescue, the cutters maneuvered around the 'Maryland', strategically breaking ice to create a navigable path, though their size limited their proximity to the tug. Meanwhile, with one cutter working to clear a channel northward, the 'Jason Reinauer' worked diligently to help the barge regain its mobility. For further insights and visuals of this remarkable rescue operation, refer to the full report with accompanying photographs at Poughkeepsie Journal.
