Transformation of Northwest Stormpetrel into Innovative FSRU

Sep 11, 2025 11:01

In a significant development within the maritime energy sector, the Synergy Marine Group has successfully transformed the LNG tanker 'Northwest Stormpetrel' into a vital floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) as part of the groundbreaking 'Karadeniz LNGT Powership Americas' initiative. This ambitious project, managed by Synergy Marine Group, took place at the Seatrium Admiralty Yard in Singapore, marking a notable achievement in energy conversion technologies. The newly converted FSRU is capable of storing liquefied natural gas and converting it back to gaseous form for electricity generation, enhancing its versatility. Remarkably, this FSRU can process up to 150 million cubic feet of gas per day, designed to function offshore for an impressive ten years without requiring docking. One of the standout features of this unit is its ability to receive LNG through ship-to-ship transfers, regasify it, and subsequently supply the gas to nearby floating power plants. The prime client, Turkish energy powerhouse Karpowership, operates the largest fleet of powerships globally, providing a rapid solution to electricity shortages in regions in dire need. When integrated with powerships, this FSRU provides a complete floating energy solution; the process involves importing, storing, and regasifying gas on the FSRU, which then fuels the powerships. This efficient setup enables the rapid delivery of electricity to millions of households within a matter of months. Following its conversion, the 'Northwest Stormpetrel' departed from Singapore on August 17, 2025, and has been anchored off the coast of Kuala Sungai Baru at position 02° 20' N 102° 01' E since August 23.

Ailing Crew Member Rescued from Vessel Near Darwin

Jun 05, 2013 10:31

On June 5, 2013, the LNG carrier 'NW Storm Petrel' resumed its voyage from Nagoya to Dampier after a crew member required medical evacuation off the northern coast of Australia. The airlift operation, arranged by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), was executed by CareFlight, who responded after the crew member fell ill. The ship adjusted its route to facilitate the helicopter landing. The patient, a resident of Brisbane, informed CareFlight flight nurse Paul Campbell that he had been feeling increasingly unwell since June 2. Due to the safety protocols regarding the vessel's air-filled LNG tanks, 'NW Storm Petrel' was unable to approach closer to Darwin Harbour. Pilot John Beasy and air crewman Daniel Warring successfully landed on the ship’s helideck, allowing for a seamless transfer of care. The crew member was subsequently flown to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he arrived in a stable condition.
