Typhoon Lingling Causes Container Loss for Xin Ou 21 Near Zhoushan

Sep 10, 2019 09:19

During the powerful Typhoon Lingling, the cargo vessel 'Xin Ou 21' encountered perilous conditions, tipping heavily to its starboard side on the night of September 5, 2019, while sailing from Xiamen to Rizhao near Zhoushan. This incident resulted in the loss of 72 containers into the sea. Fortunately, the ship managed to anchor north of Zhoushan, and local authorities initiated recovery efforts for the floating cargo scattered along the coastline. Vessels navigating the affected area received navigational hazard alerts due to the debris. Among the lost containers, many were white, containing packaged frozen meat, while others were colored red, blue, or green, loaded with A4 paper or wood. Following the storm, officials noted that numerous packages of frozen meat, specifically beef, pork, poultry, and animal organs, had drifted ashore near Putuoshan. The local government quickly issued a warning on September 7, advising against the consumption of these contaminated meat products due to spoilage. In the aftermath of the typhoon, a fleet of 15 patrol boats scoured the primary waterways around Qionglai, Lushan, Maju, Putuoshan, Shenjiamen, and Liuheng. Recovery operations resulted in the discovery of 36 containers on Putuoshan and Baisha Island. Of these, nearly 20 were either disposed of or submerged, while one was successfully salvaged at Ningbo Xiangshan. Fishing boats also aided in retrieving additional containers, towing between three to four to Xiangshan Port. By September 9, at 4 p.m., authorities reported the recovery of 18 containers, with an additional 15 situated on the west side of Putuo Mountain and nine still awaiting salvage in the Xiangshan Sea area off Ningbo.
