Dramatic Medevac Operation Off Port Elizabeth
On the evening of August 17, 2018, at 9 p.m., the diligent team at NSRI Port Elizabeth received an urgent call for medical assistance from the bulk carrier 'DHT Lotus.' This ship, carrying a full load, was navigating the waters of the South African coast on its way to Singapore when a 38-year-old Indian crew member sustained a serious eye injury of unknown origin. In response to the situation, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) promptly activated the NSRI lifeboat 'Spirit of Toft.' The lifeboat set out and met up with the 'DHT Lotus' approximately 12 miles south of Cape Recife, all while contending with challenging sea swells reaching three to four meters. A skilled NSRI rescue swimmer was then deployed onto the vessel, requiring a challenging ascent due to the ship's 11-meter freeboard. Once on board, the patient was assessed to be in stable condition and was secured in a safety harness for the transfer back to the 'Spirit of Toft.' The entire operation took about 45 minutes amidst heavy seas, but the crew remained resolute. Eventually, the patient was successfully brought into the Port of Port Elizabeth and transported to a local hospital, where he continued to be treated, remaining stable throughout the process.
