Successful Moorage of Abis Calais at El Ferrol Port

Jan 29, 2014 12:07

On January 29, at precisely 11:15 AM, the tugboat "Ibaizal Tres" (IMO: 7325887) successfully towed the cargo vessel "Abis Calais" to the Navantia port pier. Earlier, the tug "SebastiƔn de Ocampo" had played a crucial role in stopping the drifting of the cargo ship, which was found adrift approximately 1.5 miles from Cape PrioriƱo. The situation became critical when the tow line snapped at 8:05 AM near Illas Gabeiras, causing the ship to be resecured only to lose connection again at 8:53 AM off PrioriƱo Chico. Fortunately, the port tugboat "Ibaizabal Nueve" arrived from A CoruƱa at around 8:30 AM, reattaching to the vessel by 9:30 AM. The weather conditions also improved, with west winds decreasing from a gusty 51-61 km/h to a more manageable 25 km/h. Finally, at 12:35 PM, the "Abis Calais" was safely moored in the inner port of El Ferrol, aided by the tugs "Ibaizabal Tres," "Ibaizabal Nueve," "Ibaizabal Cinco," and "Eliseo VƔzquez," who assisted in the final docking maneuvers. Stranded Cargo Ship Abis Calais Rescued Off El Ferrol

Jan 29, 2014 10:39

The cargo vessel Abis Calais, having departed from Leixoes on January 25, was en route to Hull carrying 5,000 tons of wood pellets when disaster struck on the morning of January 27. At 8 a.m., a propeller failure caused the ship to drift seven miles northwest of Cape Prior. In response to the emergency, the vessel's owner urgently hired the tugboat Ria de Vigo for assistance. Unfortunately, the severe storm prevented an initial connection between the Ria de Vigo and the Abis Calais. Initiating a coordinated salvage operation, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Spain deployed several emergency vessels, including the tug Sar Gavia, the naval tug Mahon, and the Xunta rescue vessel SebastiĆ”n de Ocampo from El Ferrol. By 3:20 p.m. on January 28, despite fierce weather conditions with winds exceeding 80 mph and towering waves up to nine meters, a tow was finally established. However, just two miles from Cabo Prior, the tow line snapped at 8:30 p.m. In light of the situation, plans were examined to evacuate the eight crew members from Ukraine, the Netherlands, and the Philippines as efforts by the SebastiĆ”n de Ocampo and Sar Gavia to re-establish towing failed. Rescue helicopters, Pesca II from Celeiro and Helimer 209 from A CoruƱa, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Remarkably, less than two nautical miles off the coast, the SebastiĆ”n de Ocampo managed to reconnect a tow line to the Abis Calais, and shortly after, Sar Gavia secured a second line at the stern. The convoy then moved towards the open sea. The destination—either El Ferrol or A CoruƱa—remained uncertain, pending an assessment of sea conditions. Authorities estimated that the operation to safely bring the Abis Calais to port would take at least ten hours.
