In the early hours of March 26, 2017, a maritime incident occurred 18 kilometers off the Ostend coast when the tanker 'Galway Fisher' collided with the pilot vessel 'Pilot 1' at 4:35 a.m. The collision impacted the port side of the 'Galway Fisher', resulting in noticeable damage to both the hull and railing of the tanker. Two Dutch pilots onboard 'Pilot 1' sustained minor injuries, prompting their evacuation via helicopter to a nearby hospital where they were treated for back injuries. Following the incident, both vessels sustained damage to their hulls, with the pilot boat safely returning to Ostend. Notably, the 'Galway Fisher' was not carrying a cargo at the time and was situated on the sandbank known as Westhinder. The tanker, which had departed from Cork on March 20 for scheduled drydocking in Sluiskil, successfully docked in Terneuzen by 8 p.m. the same day and continued its journey toward Sluiskil at 9:30 a.m. on March 27.
