Pirouette on the Kiel Canal: 'A La Marine' Grounds After Thruster Failure
In a maritime mishap on February 2, 2012, at 01:25 a.m., the 'A La Marine' was involved in an incident while navigating the Kiel Canal near Schülp. The vessel, which was en route from St. Petersburg to Zeebrügge, experienced a sudden loss of control due to a failure in its bow thruster linked to an overloaded electrical system and a subsequent generator failure. This mechanical failure resulted in the ship's rudder also becoming inoperable, causing the 'A La Marine' to drift towards the port side. The vessel ultimately collided with pilings before grounding. Following the allision, the Kiel Canal was temporarily closed to all shipping traffic between Audorf and Breiholz. Fortunately, at 02:40 a.m., the 'A La Marine' was able to refloat using its own power and continued its journey to Brunsbüttel, where it docked at the Navy Pilings to undergo necessary surveys. Fortunately, the vessel sustained only minor damages, while the extent of the impact on the pilings remains under evaluation. This incident underscores the critical importance of maintenance and operating protocols for maritime vessels navigating busy shipping routes.
