Maersk Vessel Under Tow After Engine Room Incident

Jun 09, 2020 09:17

The 'Laura Maersk' is currently being towed to Newark following a recent incident involving a turbocharger failure. The situation unfolded 442 kilometers southeast of Newark when a minor explosion occurred in the vessel's engine room, resulting in injuries to one crew member who has since been medevaced and is on the path to recovery. American tug 'Atlantic Enterprise' (IMO: 7417240) arrived on the scene at 2 p.m. on June 8 to assist the stricken vessel. Fortunately, the fire that ensued was quickly extinguished, and no additional damage to the ship was reported, with the cargo remaining secure. In response to the incident, Maersk has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the underlying cause of the turbocharger malfunction.

Explosive Incident Leaves Laura Maersk Disabled Off Ocean City

Jun 06, 2020 20:57

On June 5, 2020, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully medevaced an injured crew member from the containership 'Laura Maersk', approximately 275 miles offshore from Ocean City. The vessel, which had departed from Algeciras en route to Newark, reported an explosion in its engine room on the evening of June 4, leading to a fire that resulted in burns to one of the crew. Swiftly responding, the Coast Guard's Fifth District command center dispatched air support from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Both an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules airplane were deployed for the operation. Considering the vast distance involved, coordination with U.S. Fleet Forces Command was crucial, allowing the helicopter to refuel on the USS 'Mahan (DDG 72)' before completing the medevac. Upon reaching the scene, Coast Guard personnel hoisted the injured man onboard and facilitated his transport to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Meanwhile, plans are underway to salvage the incapacitated vessel.
