Injury Incident on United Ambassador Highlights Risks at Sea

Dec 22, 2016 09:29

On December 21, 2016, an unfortunate incident aboard the United Ambassador resulted in injuries to two crew members while the vessel was anchored at Port Arthur Anchorage, approximately 20 miles from the Texas Point Wildlife Refuge. The accident occurred in the afternoon when a pressurized component malfunctioned, impacting the crew. The distress call was made to the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Port Arthur at 2:35 p.m. A 24-year-old crew member sustained significant injuries after being struck in the head, leading to bleeding and a loss of consciousness. Another crew member, aged 42, suffered a broken nose. In response to the emergency, Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston acted swiftly, diverting an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Houston while also deploying a 45-foot response boat from Station Sabine at approximately 2:45 p.m. Upon arrival, the rescuers evaluated the injured crew members. The helicopter crew opted to airlift the 24-year-old with critical head injuries, while the 42-year-old was safely transported to the response boat for further medical attention. Both individuals were transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas for treatment. The 42-year-old was reported to be in stable condition, whereas the younger crew member was transferred to Christus Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth Hospital due to the severity of his injuries, where he was breathing but remained unconscious. This incident underscores the inherent dangers faced at sea and the importance of prompt medical response in maritime operations.
