Rescue at Sea: Coast Guard Saves Overdue Fishing Crew Near Panama
On January 6, 2014, the United States Coast Guard cutter 'Boutwell' sprang into action to assist the 'New General,' a fishing vessel that initiated a distress call after being flagged by the 'El Apache.' This fishing vessel had been missing for about a week during its journey back to Panama City, Panama, with a scheduled return date of December 28. Unfortunately, 'El Apache' encountered mechanical troubles due to an engine failure. Located approximately 100 nautical miles southwest of Panama, the 'El Apache' had been adrift for an arduous 14 days when the 11th District Command Center in Alameda, California alerted the crew of the 'Boutwell.' Upon arriving at the scene, the Coast Guard crew successfully rescued four fishermen from the disabled vessel. The crew members were provided with fresh water and taken aboard the 'Boutwell,' while Coast Guard engineers worked to identify and fix the engine issue, attributed to a defective fuel pump. Despite their efforts, repairs were unsuccessful, prompting the 'Boutwell' to tow the 'El Apache' back to safety. Demonstrating remarkable survival skills, the fishermen shared how they managed to endure the challenging ordeal. They had rationed their catch, including even their bait, and supplemented their diet with small amounts of rice that they cooked using a gas stove. Additionally, they ingeniously collected rainwater during recent squalls for hydration and constructed a sail from a tarp and a floating log to aid mobility. Once aboard the 'Boutwell,' the rescued fishermen received food, water, fresh clothing, showers, and the opportunity to call their families. The following day, they were transferred to a Panamanian Coast Guard vessel operating near David, Panama, ensuring their safe return to loved ones.
