Impact of Typhoon No. 5 on Maritime Operations in Vietnam
Between October 29 and 31, 2019, Typhoon No. 5 wreaked havoc in the coastal provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, and Khanh Hoa in Vietnam. As a result, seven vessels anchored in Quy Nhon Bay were uprooted by the storm's powerful winds. Among the affected ships was the Vietnamese flagged 'Long Chau,' which had a crew of five, and the 'Hoa Binh 45,' manned by 16 individuals. Other vessels included the local 'Truong Thanh 26' with eight crew members, the Panama-flagged 'VSG Pride' carrying 19 crew, and the Vietnamese 'Phu Trung 16' with six onboard. The empty 'VSG Pride' drifted to the southern tip of Hai Minh, located at Hai Cang, specifically at coordinates 13°46'11”N, 109°15'21”E, near Qui Nhon port. The 'Truong Thanh 26' initially floated downstream, finding itself stranded before the beach of Quy Nhon. Similarly, the 'Hoa Binh 45' drifted from buoy 16 towards the entrance of Thi Nai port. The 'Long Chau' veered from buoy 16 to the An Phu buoy wharf, eventually grounding itself. Additionally, the vessel 'Khanh Ngoc 18' followed suit—their journeys resulting in a leak from one of its reserve oil tanks. Both 'Phu Trung 16' and 'Quang Vinh 09' also drifted downstream and became stranded, reflecting the chaotic impact of the typhoon on the shipping activities in the region.
